June 17th, 2016

History is against Maurus in the 2016 Ipswich Cup (2150m), however veteran hoop Damian Browne is confident the horse has the class to win the feature race west of Brisbane on Saturday.

Maurus has been a strong and consistent performer through his entire racing career so far; posting an impressive five wins and seven minors through only sixteen appearances since debuting for David Vandyke in 2014.

The Medicean gelding has been charged with overcoming 58kgs in the Ipswich Cup; a weight that hasn’t been lugged to victory in the race since Sharply was crowned with 58.5kgs in tow in 1961, but Browne is confident the conditions of the race this year suggest Maurus will be tough to beat.

“The race has declined in depth over the years, like a lot of staying races and it’s a long way from the best Ipswich Cup field I have seen,” Browne told The Courier Mail.

“I think that means it’s not going to be as hard for a highest-weighted horse. The ones up the top deserve to be there because the race falls right away.

“My only worry is that he missed a run two weeks ago and now he finds himself four weeks between runs.

“If they happen to get rain and it becomes a real tough staying slog; that might be the telling factor.

“Other than that, he looks the right horse for this race.”

Returning to racing in February for second in the Ranvet BM92 (1500m) on February 20th, Maurus was blocked for a run rounding onto the final straight in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 5th but produced a smart turn of foot to run on for third.

Returning to the paddock for a brief freshen-up, Maurus won a talent-rich trial at Hawkesbury before savaging the line for success in the Windsor Management Insurance Brokers Handicap (2200m) at Doomben on April 30th.

Charging home for a credible fifth in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) last time out on May 21st, Maurus will also have to overcome the outside barrier in the Ipswich Cup. is currently offering the best 2016 Ipswich Cup odds, for which Maurus can be taken at a generous quote of $2.45 for success.
