Jumbo Prince to Contest 2016 Ipswich Cup

Jumbo Prince failed to make anything of an impact in the Listed Wayne Wilson Mile over the weekend but has been confirmed to back up in Saturday’s 2016 Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Jumbo Prince has been a strong and consistent performer for Toowoomba-based trained Michael Nolan through his entire racing career so far; posting ten wins and eleven minors through a total of thirty-three appearances.

Veteran hoop Jim Byrne has partnered the Outback Prince entire through each of his three most-recent starts, and expects the four-year-old to be far-better suited to the conditions of the 2016 Ipswich Cup this weekend.

“He got caught deep and they walked in front,” Byrne told AAP of Jumbo Prince’s run in the Wayne Wilson Mile.

“Forget the run. I expect to ride him in the Ipswich Cup if he recovers well.”

Returning in the winter of 2015 in particularly smart form, Jumbo Prince won the G McKellar Memorial Handicap (1200m) first-up; progressing to second in the Stradbroke Eve Calcutta BM85 (1350m) before taking out the Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) with ease on May 2nd.

Tunning third in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) in what was his black type debut only one week later, Jumbo Prince placed a credible sixth in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2020m) before ending his season third in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m).

Returning in October for success in the Suez Recycling & Recovery Handicap (1200m), the entire out of b placed second amongst classy company in a Doomben minor over 1350m before running seventh in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) and fifth in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1640m) most notably.

Clearly requiring a run when tenth in the Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) first-up on April 16th, Jumbo Prince ran third in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) and won the Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) on May 14th; placing ninth in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) in what was his only other start prior to the Wayne Wilson Mile.

The 2016 Ipswich Cup field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
