Garud Allocated Awkward Barrier for 2014 Ipswich Cup

June 12th, 2014

A leading chance for success in this weekend’s featured Ipswich Cup (2150m) in Queensland, trainer Mike Moroney has revealed he is not content with drawing the awkward barrier 13 for sole entrant Garud.

Steadily building to the task over just three competitive starts this time in, Moroney said that while pleased with the condition of the High Chaparral gelding and confident in his abilities, the six-year-ld will need a clean and lucky race to be any chance of success.

“He should really strip towards his best for this race,” Moroney told Racing Ahead.

“I thought that his last two runs were good, but I just wish that he had drawn a better barrier than that because he is a horse that you can sneak forward on to a degree and he will relax if you can get cover with him.

“From that draw we are probably going to be forced to go back a wee bit and we have to hope that they will run the race truly.

“They usually do around Ipswich and he is a nice horse, but the barrier draw isn’t going to be a help for him at all.”

Eyeing a possible berth in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse just one week later, Moroney said a final decision will be based on success in the Ipswich Cup.

“There is a chance that we are keener on the Tatt’s Cup the following week and if he came through all right we would back him up,” Moroney said.

“We have been a bit of a question mark over him getting 2400 metres in heavy ground and they have had a fair bit of rain there compared to Brisbane and that track has been racing slow to heavy recently.”

Claiming three race victories and 13 minor places from 26 competitive race starts to date, Garud was disappointing when blocked for a run and twelfth in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) first-up on April 19th, but has since returned to good form through minor placings in Victorian staying events.

Confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Michael Cahill, Garud is currently offered at generous $7 odds for success in the 2014 Ipswich Cup at leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
