2014 Ipswich Cup Final Field and Barrier Draw

June 11th, 2014

A capacity field of 16 runners have been confirmed to line up for at tilt at this weekend’s featured Ipswich Cup (2150m), highlighted by several notable performers over the 2014 racing calendar so-far including Full Of Spirit.

Claiming four wins and seven minor places from 27 competitive race starts to date, Full Of Spirit has quickly built to the task over four race starts this preparation, but will have to overcome the wide and awkward barrier 14 if to return to the winner’s circle in the 2014 Ipswich Cup.

Unlucky to finish ninth when blocked for a run in the particularly well-contested Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) first-up on April 19th, the Flying Spur mare ran on from the rear of the field to finish a fighting sixth in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) on May 3rd, and impressed further when finishing just off the pace of Cameo in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) just two weeks later.

Having since finished third in the Eremein Handicap (1800m), trainer Peter Moody has also accepted a position in a Rosehill Gardens event over 2000 metres for Full Of Spirit this weekend, but revealed he is more than likely to send his five-year-old north for the Ipswich Cup.

Also included in the final field of the 2014 Ipswich Cup is well-trialled veteran Ironstein, who is likely to have his final run in Queensland in this weekend’s feature.

Debuting in the spring of 2008, I                ronstein has been a strong and consistent performer over every proceeding racing preparation; performing typically well over the spring of 2013 in finishing second in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) and fourth in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) most notably.

Returning to the track in similarly impressive form this season, the Zabeel gelding finishing a fighting fifth in the TAB Early Quaddie 3.y.o+ (1400m) first-up, and while unlucky when blocked for a run and seventh in the Scone Cup, returned to impressive form when claiming fourth in the Eremein Handicap.

Likely to contest his swansong at the Listed Grafton Cup in July, Ironstein is offered a great chance of leaving Queensland for the last time on a high from barrier 6.

Trainer Robert Heathcote will be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Ipswich Cup, accepting positions in the final field for talented stable mates Sam’s Town and Volkhere.

Securing six race wins and a further 20 minor places over his long and busy racing career, Sam’s Town has returned to racing in great condition this season, finishing second in both the KBW Community Management BM75 (2200m) and Blinds/Awnings Security BM85 (2200m) on May 11th and third in the Schweppes BM80 (2200m) on May 21st.

Allocated barrier 10, the Danehill Dancer gelding has proven experience of overcoming even the widest barrier, and should have no issue in contending well this weekend.

Steadily build to the task this time in, Volkhere is likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 9 in the Ipswich Cup, and will be further boosted by in-form jockey Tim Bell.

Securing a total of six race wins and eleven minor places from 31 competitive starts, the Dehere gelding overcame a disappointing run for fifteenth in the Winning Edge Signature Handicap (1400m) first-up with a good performance in the XXXX Gold BM90 (1600m) before impressing further when third in the Mittys BM90 (1800m) last time out.

Bryan Guy-trained Dienekes will leave from the inside barrier in the 2014 Ipswich Cup, while kiwi import High Kin has been charged with the unenviable task of overcoming the wide barrier 16.
